March 2017…Rat Queens are Back!!!

It was announced on November 17 that Rat Queens will be back with a soft reboot in March. After a bit of a break, Kurtis J. Wiebe recruited Owen Gieni, as the artist, to bring our favorite characters, Dee, Betty, Hannah, and Violet, back to life.

Now don’t get me wrong I flipped when I read the headline that Rat Queens was coming back. Yet, my heart sank a bit when it was announced that another man was hired to write a comic book where women were the main protagonists. I don’t want to imply that if a comic book is led by a female character that it then has to be written or drawn and colored by women. I just wish that it was more common for non-white, non-male, non-straight people to be comic book creators.

Companies, like Marvel and Image, should not have their hands forced into choosing people of color, women, LGBT creators. I believe that making them do that could cause quality to drop because they are reluctant to change. However, DC and other companies need to accept and become more aware that comic book fans span over every race, age, gender and sexual orientation. They also need to wake up to the fact that they cannot just bring more diverse characters to the forefront.

A look through Deviant Art and Tumblr tells you that many fans have passions beyond reading and discussing comic books. They are and want to become creators. The diverse creators are there. If the selection of creators remains fairly limited, companies may isolate themselves so far that they will loose fans. Lose of fans could spell major financial hurt for comic book companies.

Still…Yay! Rat Queens are coming back. I just wish it was better news!
